Vitiligo is a skin condition where the melanocytes, the cell responsible for producing pigment that gives skin color, are destroyed. As a result of the destruction, white patches form in those areas usually around the lips, eyes and the torso. Vitiligo is not transmissible, and there are no significant health consequences to people with vitiligo. Nonetheless, since the melanocytes are destroyed, the skin’s ability to protect itself from UV rays is compromised and therefore, people with vitiligo should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun especially without sunscreen.

Treatment for Vitiligo

Although it’s a painless and harmless medical condition, people with vitiligo are usually ostracized because of their appearance. In fact, there are places in India where a woman with vitiligo is discriminated against in marriage. It has no cure, so once you have it, you will have to deal with it for the rest of your life. But there are medically accepted treatments that can reduce the white patches of skin such use of topical steroid, ultraviolet therapy and depigmentation.

Natural Ways To Treat Vitiligo

Medical treatment however, can be expensive. Fortunately for vitiligo sufferers, there are now ways to get rid of the white patches of skin using natural ingredients. Here’s a list of the products with a detailed instruction on how to use them:

1. Figs and walnuts

Prepare a thick paste of grounded roast figs and water and slather them on the affected areas. Leave it on the skin for a few minutes, then rinse well. You can also make a similar concoction using grounded walnut and water. At the same time, consume lots of raw figs and walnuts in order to improve blood circulation and help erase the white spots from within.

2. Honey

Take advantage of the antifungal properties of honey and apply it raw on affected areas. Allow the skin to absorb it for best results. You can also add turmeric, rice, or sandalwood (all powder form) to raw honey if you want to boost the healing properties using a pastry concoction.

3. Holy Basil

You can also wipe the oil of holy basil on the white spots. Or boil some holy basil leaves and use it to wash the affected areas once it reaches room temperature. Add turmeric powder which acts as an antiseptic.

4. Copper

Copper irons help produce melanin, the pigment that colors the skin. You can get copper irons by leaving drinking water in copper vessel overnight in room temperature. Drink this in the morning. Do not refrigerate as cold destroys the copper properties.

5. Cabbage

Apply crushed cabbage leaves on the affected area and leave for at least ten minutes. Rinse away with lukewarm water. Or wash areas with white patches with the water from boiled cabbages. You should also consume more cabbages either as juice or part of your diet.

6. Radish seeds

Grind the seeds or the leaves of radish and mix with two teaspoons of vinegar for every 25 grams. Set aside the combined paste overnight and apply on the affected areas the following morning. Leave it on for 1-2 hours.

7. Turmeric

Combine turmeric and mustard oil at a ratio of 5 teaspoons of turmeric powdered for every 250 milliliters of mustard oil. Apply the combined ingredients to the affected areas twice a day. Or make a paste from turmeric and Neem leaves and use it the same way.

8. Neem

Aside from #7, you can also use the ground powder from the leaves, fruits and flowers of the Neem tree by mixing a teaspoon of it with water daily. You can also apply the paste of the mixture of water and Neem leaves on the vitiligo.

9. Ginger

You can also consume ginger juice on a regular basis to get rid of the white patches. Take the extract of ginger and mix with lemon juice and water. You can also rub the ginger directly on the spots or mix ginger juice and red clay to make a paste. Leave it for approximately 20 minutes, then wash and dry properly.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar

Use plenty of apple cider vinegar in your cooking. At the same time, mix said liquid with water and use as a wash. The acid in the vinegar will destroy the fungi and bacteria.

Erasing the white patches can take a while. Other than the foregoing ingredients, you need a lot of patience too. But if you keep to the regimen faithfully, you will see encouraging results in a matter of weeks.
